The "Jordan Rules Part 2"

In the Eastern Conference Finals the Jordan Rules prevailed again. The Piston BAD BOYS, Isiah "Zeke" Thomas, Joe "Buddha" Dumars, Dennis "Worm" Rodman, John "Spider" Salley and Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson meet the Chicago Bulls again. After averaging a phenomenal 43 points at 55%, 7 rebounds and 7 assists against the 76ers in the East Semis, Air Jordan got grounded by the Pistons. At home, Detroit easily won the first two games 86-77 and 102-93. MJ was knocked frequently to the floor and was limping on a bruised leg and hip by close of Game 2. Good news. Game 3 at Chicago, the Bulls won by 5 points with Jordan scoring 47 points and 10 rebounds and Pippen 29 points and 11 rebounds. Game 4 was similar, the Bulls coming from behind for a 7 point victory. Jordan had 42 points. Game 5 at Detroit, the Bad Boys are back and Jordan shot 7 of 19. Pippen, who was slammed brutally to the floor by Thomas on a drive, shot even worse - 5 for 20. Detroit by 14 points. Game 6, Jordan's teammates "disappeared". Horace Grant shot 3 for 17, B.J. Armstrong 1 for 8 and Craig Hodges 3 of 13. Bulls went down 93-74. GAME OVER.

The AJ 5 was inspired by World War II British and American Fighter planes and Michael's game. MJ would hang around the outer and swoop in from nowhere to attack. The planes would have nose-art with flames or shark teeth painted on them which formed the basis of the "reverse flames" design on the shoe's midsole (pg 89, Driven from Within). The "reverse flames" gave the developers a major headache because flames on midsoles were never done before. It was the first time in the world this was done.

Where the AJ 4 were more utilitarian, the AJ 5 were to combine both technical & style panáche. The clear outsole was inspired by the clear panels of Marty MacFly's (Michael J. Fox) Back to the Future II boots (see above pic) which Tinker had designed for the movie. Effectively, the AJ 5 were known as "glass-bottom" sneakers in the world and again pushing the design envelope of what is possible. Tinker put a reflective 3M tongue with Jumpman embroidery. Whenever a photograph flash goes off, the tongue would light up and the tiny Jumpman would be highlighted in the background. A great way to get free-advertising.

"If we run a system, everyone is going to have an opportunity to perform. They can't do the spectacular one-on-one things that you can do, but they can have some level of success and perform on some level, even in crucial situations."
- Phil Jackson explaining the importance of the triangle offence to Jordan

The Air Jordan 5 design was inspired by the "grey nurse shark" paintjob on the World War II British fighter plane, Supermarine Spitfire MkVIII.
