The Glyde vs Air

The 1991-92 NBA Finals was supposed to be a showdown between Clyde Drexler (the second best player in the league) and Michael Jordan. But a showdown it wasn't, as Drexler forced one bad shot after another and in Game 5 was viciously dunked on by Pippen. Jordan scored 46 points and Pippen 24 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists. Buck Williams played like Uncle Buck at crunch time. Just didn't know what hit him...

Game one, Michael Jordan was superhuman, nailing six consecutive threes and crushing the Trail Blazers into oblivion on Thursday night.

But in game two on Saturday in Chicago, Jordan succumbed to the human failing of over-reacting to a refereeing decision when Chicago led 92-82 with 4min 25 sec to play. A few seconds earlier Portland had lost their best player, Clyde Drexler, who was fouled out of the game, and were staring defeat in the face. Jordan committed a senseless foul against Portland guard Terry Porter and made the mistake of using a profanity while arguing the call with referee Jess Kersey, who had more microphones on him than an FBI agent sent to get the dirt on the Mafia.

Kersey called a technical foul on the star, giving Porter three freethrows which he made to take Portland within seven points of the Bulls. The Trail Blazers surged back to lock up the game 97-97 at full time, and won it 115-104 in overtime.

In game three, the Bulls snatched back home-court advantage on Sunday and put a big dent on the confidence of the Portland Trail Blazers, winning game three 94-84. The win stunned the 12,888 strong crowd at Memorial Coliseum.
The Blazers' confidence were in question because this is how the 1990 finals began, In that one, the Blazers split the first two games in Auburn Hills, Michigan, against the Detroit Pistons, then came home and lost three straight. Clyde Drexler scored a game-high 32 points, but he received little support. The Bulls certainly weren't world-beaters offensively, tiring in the final quarter.

To overcome their 2-3 deficit, Portland Trailblazers would have to win the sixth and seventh games at Chicago Stadium. Five teams have rallied from 2-3 to win the finals, but none has done it by winning twice on the road. The Blazers won the fifth game 119-116 on Friday night after a 10-0 run by the Bulls in the opening minutes. Deja vu for Portland coach Rick Adelman with the team about to self-destruct like they did in the 1990 NBA Finals against Detroit Pistons.

Game six, Jordan sat on the bench as the team charged from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 97-93. The Bulls trailed 64-79 starting the fourth quarter. But Portland scored only two points in the first 3:24 of the period. Drexler, who had 24 points, scored for Portland to make it 83-78, but Scottie Pippen and Jordan scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 83-82. Porter sank two freethrows but Pippen dropped in a three-pointer to tie it at 85 The score was also tied at 87 and at 89, but Pippen's jumper gave Chicago the lead for good. 91-89, with 2:21 left.

Porter was called for travelling and Jordan drove for a short jumper to make it 93-89 at 1:39. Portland's last chance came with 46 seconds left when Buck Williams and Horace Grant participated in a jump ball with Chicago leading 93-91. The ball sailed out of bounds adn the officials signaled Portland's way before reversing the call. Jordan clinched the game with a driving lay-up that make it 95-91 with 35.9 sec left. Portland's Jerome Kersey hit two freethrows, but Jordan followed with two of his own with 11.8 sec left for the final score. The Bulls won the best of seven finals series 4-2. It was a thriller.

"Today we stand tall," said Jordan, who became the first player in NBA history to win the Most Valuable Player award two years in a row. "I can't really express the way I feel. It has been an unbelievable season for me personally and for the team," he said.

Ring #2 for Jordan & Co.

The AJ 7 was inspired by some African art festival poster that Tinker Hatfield (head designer) saw in Portland. The colours were "ecclectic" to say the least. A full-length Huarache inner bootie fits like a sock around your foot. The shoes are light. Minimal padding and support around the ankle. They are very comfortable to wear but only suitable for point-guards and light forwards because of the lack of support.

NBA Finals, Air Jordan dunks on Jerome Kersey. How Kersey didn't smack Jordan's head will remain a mystery for many...

- Danny Ainge of Portland Trailblazers

"Going into the series I thought Michael had 2,000 moves. I was wrong. He has 3,000."
- Clyde Drexler after Portland's loss the 1991-92 Finals
